HYDROELECTRIC POWER PLANTS

The frequent occurrence of phytoplankton blooms is degrading the quality of water in hydroelectric dams around the world, making the water unusable as a source of drinking water or irrigation.

Removing phytoplankton from water treatment plants where water is taken from the dam is costly and time-consuming (e.g. dismantling and cleaning sand filters) and therefore impractical.
